Synopsis

The Laramie Project by Moises Kaufman and the members of the Tectonic Theatre Project. Directed by Carin Silkaitis. In October 1998 Matthew Shepard, an openly gay college student, was kidnapped, severely beaten, tied to a fence, and left to die on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. Five weeks later, Moises Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project went to Laramie, and over the course of the next year, conducted more than 200 interviews with people of the town. From these interviews they wrote the play THE LARAMIE PROJECT, a chronicle of the life of the town of Laramie in the year after the murder. The NCC Theatre Department produced this play on the 10th anniversary of Matt's death, and this October will mark the 20th Anniversary. The department will continue producing this play every 10 years until they no longer have to.

Other Theatre Chicago is proud to support this production - providing resources, workshops and research. Students traveled to Laramie Wyoming through support made possible by our generous funders and donors. Kelli Simpkins - Tectonic Theatre Project member and one of the writers of the play - will be joining us in Naperville for a talkback on Friday, October 5th.

There is nothing she finds more satisfying than watching the characters emerge from the page they were composed on, living and dressed in the designs of The Laramie Project’s production team. She is so grateful to have been a part of it. CJ wants to thank her friends, family, and professors for their support and guiding light in her process of learning to be a better designer!
